In 79 AD the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, preserving them for almost two thousand years. Today they are two of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world, and Vesuvius is the only active volcano on mainland Europe. With a private driver you can see all three in one day, without timetables, trains or crowded buses.
Your driver picks you up at your hotel or port in Naples, Sorrento or on the Amalfi Coast and stays with you all day, about 8 hours.
The itinerary
Pompeii
Walk along the original Roman streets, see the Forum, the theatres, the baths, the houses with their frescoes and the casts of the victims. The site is huge: we recommend at least 2 to 3 hours, ideally with a licensed guide who brings the ancient city to life.
Mount Vesuvius
Your driver takes you up the volcano to the car park at about 1,000 metres. From there a path of about 30 to 40 minutes leads to the edge of the crater, with views over the whole Bay of Naples. Access to the crater requires a ticket and can close in bad weather or strong wind.
Herculaneum
Smaller than Pompeii but even better preserved: houses with two floors, wooden beams, mosaics and colours that survived under the volcanic mud. It is easy to visit in 1 to 2 hours and perfect at the end of the day.

Smaller than Pompeii but in better condition because protected by a flow of mud, Ercolano was discovered in a completely random way, through the excavation of a well in 1709, during which marbles and statues that adorned the Theater of the ancients came to the light city. And thanks to the importance of the works found, such as mosaics, paintings, indoor and outdoor environments, the excavations of Herculaneum are one of the most prestigious monumental complexes of classical antiquity and you will admire and discover its treasures through a guided tour without equal. -
Vesuvius National Park Stop: 90 Minutes
Vesuvius is the only active volcano in continental Europe and is responsible for some of the largest volcanic eruptions on the continent. Although it represented a threat in the past, it remains forever one of the key symbols of Neapolitan history and culture. Going up towards the top, along the way you will admire the works made entirely of volcanic material by artists from around the world and once you reach the highest point, you will enjoy one of the most extraordinary scenarios in the entire Gulf of Naples, learning the history of that that the Neapolitan people. -
